After last week’s adventure with Win7 on the Acer Aspire One netbook, this week we decided to install Windows 7 on our 13” aluminum MacBook. MacAndWin

We took on the task with a little trepidation because online forums all say that there are driver problems. Result? Win7 installed perfectly. We didn’t install via VM. We overwrote our original Vista partition on Bootcamp and we are now running it natively.

Installation was smooth. Since we already had a Vista partition created by Bootcamp, we just popped in the Win 7 Beta DVD, power on your MacBook while holding the option key and bootedfrom the DVD drive. If you don’t have a separate partition created yet, you should run Bootcamp on OS X to start the installation. Once we were booting from the DVD, we chose to have Win 7 installed on our existing Vista partition.

After the installation completed, there was one more step. We had to use the original DVD that came with our MacBook to install the drivers. The Vista drivers worked fine for Win7. Once we have done that, everything ran smoothly including audio, WiFi, touchpad, graphics (including aero glass effect) and keyboard keys. Note that to perform a right-click, you just do a 3-finger press on the touchpad, just like on Vista.

So in summary, we continue to be very impressed by Windows 7 and we are loving its performance on the MacBook. It’s FAST!!

If you want to try Windows 7 Beta yourself, you can get it directly from Microsoft here. But hurry, Microsoft is only going to make it available until Feb. 10th.
