MobileMe is Apple’s online service that let’s you sync your calendar, contacts and email across your iPhone, PCs and Macs. The service is targeted at consumers, because most business users will already have Microsoft Exchange to do all this for them. Apple charges users $99/year for this service, and here is why you don’t need it.mobileme

  1. Email Sync – what email sync? If you have any type of web mail like Hotmail, GMail or Yahoo mail, this is already there! Don’t get sucked into getting a @me.com account from Apple and pay for this.
  2. Contacts and Calendar Sync – Google recently released Google Sync to do just all this for you. With Google Sync, whether you add or modify a calendar entry or contact on your phone or on your PC/Mac (via the web), all your data will always be in sync. Best part? You don’t even need an iPhone to use Google Sync. It even supports BlackBerry, Nokia phones, Windows Mobile phones and Sony Ericsson phones. Of course, you will need to be using Google’s contacts and calendar service for this to work. But how is this different from joining Apple’s service? At least Google’s services are free! google-syncmyPhoneLogo

Microsoft is also expected to announce its own phone sync service, named My Phone, at Mobile World Congress this week, The link for Beta sign-ups should be up soon.
