Sometimes, our passion for everything mobile seems irrational even to ourselves. But every time we think about this market, it’s just so damn exciting to us! Mobile devices are changing people’s lives everyday, much like the early days of PCs. Except, mobile phones will impact even more people, and in much deeper ways.

Consider these numbers:

  • Even in these tough economic times, smartphones seem to be defying the recession and is continuing its strong growth. 23% of all phones sold in Q4 2008 were smartphones.gartner-mobilephone-forecast
  • Worldwide sales of laptops exceeded desktops in 2008 for the first time. Notebook shipments increased 40% to 38.6 million units, compared to a 1.3% slip for desktops to 38.5 million units. But guess what? Mobile phone sales will hit 1 billion in 2009. That’s more than double of desktop and laptop sales combined.
  • It’s widely predicted by analysts that the worldwide wireless phone install base will exceed 4 billion (some predict as high as 5 billion) by 2012, while PC install base will be less than 2 billion by the same time.

In North America, Western Europe and other developed countries, we take it for granted that phones are companion devices to PCs and laptops. But for many people in developing countries, they are bypassing the PC era completely and going straight to phones. So mobile phones will be the only Internet access terminal for many around the world.

We hope now you will see why we are so passionate about mobile and how we think it will really change the world.
