We like cupcakes much like your average 3 year old like them, but when Google made it official that Android 1.5 will contain all the stuff in the Cupcake branch, we were drooling. The final release of Android is not yet available, but Google has made an early preview of the 1.5 SDK available for developers for now. Presumably, Google wants to ship 1.5 at around the same time as iPhone 3.0 so it has a competitive offering. cupcake

The new features and improvements in 1.5 are very exciting. Here are some of the most exciting features:

  • On-screen keyboard (this wasn’t available before as the G1, being the only Android device on the market for now, has a physical keyboard)
  • Video recording
  • Stereo Bluetooth support – this lets use listen to music with wireless Bluetooth earphones
  • Updated web browser with latest Webkit and super fast Squirrelfish JavaScript engine
  • Photos upload to Picasa
  • Videos upload to YouTube – this is going to be a popular one!
  • Google Talk status will now appear next to your contacts

You can see the full list on Android’s Developer Site here.

We think this is a super exciting release. As you know, we reviewed the G1 last December and gave it a thumbs-up. With the onslaught of new Android devices + Android 1.5 coming, Google continues to build momentum around the new mobile OS. Happy eating your Cupcake!
