Recently, the G1 has quietly surpassed its 1 million mark. Although we are expecting many Android phones to be released later this year, the T-Mobile G1 is still the only Android phone on the market so far.

The G1 has only been on the market for 6 months. This is an important milestone for both Google and T-Mobile, and we can only expect Android to hit the 2 million mark quicker as more Android phones hit the market.

But compared to the iPhone, how does this compare? The table below sheds some light.

  iPhone iPhone 3G Android (G1)
Time to 1st million sold. 2 months 1 Weekend 6 months
Total phones sold to date 6.1 million 15.1 million 1 million

Apple still has a huge lead over Android, but it will be interesting to see if Android will catch up as an army of new devices start to come out and Android continues to improve as a first class smartphone platform. We have no doubt that Android will sell many more million phones, but Apple also has a substantial lead in its app store, with 35,000+ apps available on the App Store now and the App Store just surpass its first 1 billion downloads earlier this week. Meanwhile, the number of apps in the Android market are still numbered in the hundreds.
