By now, everyone is expecting June to be a big month for Apple. While the official information is almost non-existent, it’s widely expected that Apple will release its iPhone OS 3.0 is software along with new revisions of iPhone hardware.

There is good news and bad news in these rumors.

First the good news: AT&T is rumored that it will be cutting $10 off from the iPhone service plan, bringing the basic iPhone service plan to $59/month. This will undoubtedly promote more customers to buy the iPhone because the biggest hurdle for someone buying the iPhone today is really the service contract. [via TheStreet.com]

Now the no-so-good news. The iPhone 3.0 hardware is rumored to only have relatively non-obvious improvements. The rumors came from a Chinese worker who claims to have been testing the close-to-production model. According to the rumors:

  • The CPU will get a 50% bump to 600MHz
  • RAM is doubled to 256 MB
  • New autofocus camera that is 3.2 MP
  • Compass that can point to a heading (in addition to the GPS)
  • Larger 32GB Flash

The exterior will look almost identical to the current iPhone 3G.

SkratchBoard.com believes that there is a high probability that these rumors are true for the simple reason that if someone were to make up something, they would probably make it more exciting than this! While this maybe disappointing to some, we are not surprised here at SkratchBoard.com. Given the tremendous success of the App Store and the continued growth of the iPhone, Apple has no reason to make big changes right now. Any significant changes to the hardware, take screen size for example, would impact all the apps on the App Store and would mean developers would need to rework their apps. If you look at any successful product in the market, the tendency is to make evolutionary changes (e.g. BMW 3-series). Why screw with something that’s already good? [via MobileCrunch]
